I can’t believe summer is drawing to a close and college football season is nearly upon us. For us that means Saturdays that revolve around my team’s playing schedule, lots of kickoffs, college traditions, and rowdy chants. Because we live two and a half hours from my favorite college in the nation, it also means tailgating.
If you went to college in the deep south, you understand the notion of elegant tailgating. Football in the deep south is sorority sisters dressed up in their Sunday best, faces caked with makeup. It’s fraternity boys dressed in suits and ties under the hot, southern sun. It’s wine and grilled pretzels and toilet paper and ringing ears from the yellin’, hootin’, hollerin’, & carryin’ on.
There’s nothing like football in the south. Nothing at all.
Even when you graduate from college, or just leave prematurely like I did, it lives in your blood. Your body can feel the buzz approaching as your blood begins to travel through your body a little quicker, bleeding the colors of your team, energy ramping up as summer winds down. Your body just knows, and if you’ve done this parenting thing right, your kids know too. They pull out their colors, they start singing the battle cry at the top of their lungs, and you start pulling out your favorite tailgating recipes to pair with your favorite tailgating wines.
I’m a fan of plastic while tailgating. It won’t break, and if you wind up getting a little too excited, you can rest assured you won’t trip and break a glass. Now, I can’t guarantee you won’t break a nail, but you won’t break a glass if you don’t have any on you, that I CAN assure you.
We usually take a cooler with our favorite libations including Woodbridge by Robert Mondavi Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon stacked wines. Each glass is a full serving and they come in a handy dandy little stack. Pick a few stacks up to share with your tailgating buddies. They’ve got little foil toppers like applesauce which makes them perfect for literally throwing at your friends. I’m envisioning some fun “through the uprights” type games with these little glasses. I’m only sort of kidding. I’m sure there’s a game in there somewhere. They’re perfect for sparking spontaneous moments on the go, they’re versatile and convenient, perfect for your next tailgating party.

My favorite ‘OMG this is SO good’ recipe is a citrus basil goat cheese dip piped onto fresh cucumbers from the garden. Not MY garden, but someone’s garden. I don’t recommend setting them up before the party, but cut the cucumber rounds up, put them in a zip-top bag and throw them in the cooler. Whip up your citrus basil chevre mixture, put that in a zip-top bag and throw that in your cooler. Don’t forget to take your Swiss Army Knife with you so you can snip a corner off for piping once you get to the partay. Don’t also forget your zest and bacon for garnish – they really do make the whole thing.
And by golly gosh, definitely don’t forget the Woodbridge by Robert Mondavi Chardonnay, it’s a perfect pairing with this delicious bite-sized munchie.

I like your tailgating style! It would be such a nice change of pace to have wine and chevre instead of chips and beer! #client
